A bone examination using a densitometer is a measure of bone mineral density.
The equipment uses the latest method known as dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), which gives a good quality image in a shorter exposure time, and is a highly accurate method of measuring bone mineral density in the spine, thigh bone or even the whole skeleton.
A densitometer test is totally painless and has no harmful effects on the health. There is no need to undress; the patient should, however, remove any metal accessories from the area to be examined. The examination lasts several minutes, and the computer then presents the results in the form of a graph and a table. Being able to assess the extent of bone mineral loss is highly important, not only for the early diagnosis of osteoporosis, but also in order to be able to identify osteopenia, a thinning of the bone mass considered to be a severe risk factor for the later development of osteoporosis. Such identifications allow heightened preventive measures to be taken.
The examination is also the principal method of ascertaining the effects of treatment, since bone mineral density is often subject to change during this time.
A Total Body test – a comprehensive whole-body bone mineral density test
A densitometer test is painless and completely harmless. An assessment of the extent of mineral loss in the bones is of vital importance not only in the early diagnosis of osteoporosis but also of osteopenia, which is the likely risk of osteoporosis, and therefore allows intensive preventive measures to be taken.
This test is also the main way of testing the effects of treatment, because bone mineral density changes under the influence of medication.
A Total Body test gives an analysis of the body’s fat and bone composition.
We also have a paediatric option, meaning that we can test children!
